The University of Edinburgh has expanded its provision of specialist Changing Places toilets (CPTs) in response to growing demand from disabled staff and students who require fully accessible facilities.

What is a Changing Places toilet?

Thousands of people across the UK, including those with disabilities that severely limit mobility or those with profound and multiple learning disabilities, cannot use standard accessible toilets.

People may need equipment, or require the support from one or more carers to get on the toilet.

Changing Places toilets, or CPTs, are larger with enough space for a user and carer, and have equipment such as a hoist, an adjustable height basin, and a shower. These allow those who aren’t able to use standard accessible toilets to continue to engage in their community and access buildings and their facilities.

University action

The University of Edinburgh is rapidly increasing our provision on Changing Places toilets in response to demand from disabled staff and students.

New CPTs have opened in the lower ground floor on the Main Library in George Square, and at Patterson’s Land in Moray House.

This is part of a broader ambition to ensure that there are accessible CPTs across each of the University’s campuses, with plans in place for the new Engineering and Darwin buildings at the King’s Buildings campus, and at the ECA campus.

Work will also begin later this year to deliver a CPT in the Usher Institute at the BioQuarter.
