Read, Write, Count

Read, Write, Count is a Scottish government-led campaign that aims to encourage families in Scotland to include easy and fun reading, writing and counting activities in their everyday lives

For many years, the Scottish Book Trust’s Bookbug programme gifted a bag of books to all P1 pupils throughout Scotland. Now, through the Read, Write, Count initiative, all P1 to P3 children receive a free bag with books, counting games and writing materials.

When the books arrive, Family Learning workers work with families to explore the activities, build confidence and promote engagement with literacy and numeracy in their young children.

University support

Students and staff from the University’s Moray House School of Education have been supporting this initiative.

As a Family Learning worker already engaged with promoting parental inclusion, it is inspiring to work with the University of Edinburgh and to link theory with practice. It has enabled all involved to explore different ways to develop our experience and understanding of meaningful partnership with parents.

Family Learning

A group of trainee teachers from Moray House worked alongside Family Learning workers and this helped them develop new skills in supporting parents to engage with their child's learning. A second group of final year students researched the Read, Write, Count initiative as their final year project.

Many thanks for involving me in the project. I hugely enjoyed working with Janey and the team at Craigroyston Primary School and hope to be involved in other projects next year at Liberton.

The project was co-ordinated by a group made up of representatives from the University of Edinburgh, The Scottish Book Trust, Family Learning Workers, Edinburgh City Libraries, Schools and Lifelong Learning and Psychological Services.

The project is expected to continue next year and organisations taking part in the project are thinking about how to expand the roll out of Read, Write, Count in the future.
