Gaelic Partnerships and Projects

The University works with partners in the city to promote the Scottish Gaelic language and culture in our local area.

Members of the public can engage in our projects in the city to use, learn and explore Gaelic in Edinburgh. 

Events 

The University hosts and collaborates on Gaelic events which are open to the public. 

Conversation Circles 

Our weekly online conversation circle runs on Thursdays 13:00-14:00 and is open to all, whether you have a connection to the University or not. 

The University's in-person Gaelic conversation group meets every second week during term time.

The University also hosts an in-person Gaelic conversation group, Cofaidh is Cabadaich, in collaboration with Capital Gaelic. The group takes place in the University’s outreach centre, Dick Vet in the Community, every second Thursday during term time, 11:00-12:00. Dates for the next series of meetings will be posted on the Gaelic pages of the University website and on Capital Gaelic’s Facebook page.

Gaelic Week Edinburgh

Hosted in collaboration with the City of Edinburgh Council, Gaelic Week Edinburgh (Seachdain Gàidhlig Dhùn Èideann) is a city-wide festival celebrating the Gaelic community in Edinburgh, past and present.  

The University and City of Edinburgh Council work with partners in the city to put together a programme of events for all ages and abilities of Gaelic during the week. 

Gaelic Week Edinburgh is held at the same time as wider World Gaelic Week (Seachdain na Gàidhlig) and takes place annually in February.

Learn 

There are many opportunities to learn and learn about Gaelic at the University of Edinburgh. The Centre for Open Learning offers Gaelic classes for beginner, intermediate and elementary level learners as well as a "Return to Gaelic" course for those who used to speak Gaelic and would like to return to the language.

History of Gaelic at the University 

School of Scottish Studies Archives 

The School of Scottish Studies was established in 1951 at the University of Edinburgh to collect and research material relating to the cultural traditions and folklore of Scotland. The School’s extensive collection includes over 33,000 audio recordings in Gaelic and Scots, a photographic archive containing thousands of images and a collection of film, video and manuscripts. 

The archives are an important national resource and can be accessed for study and personal research by members of the public, staff and students.

Members of the public can visit the School of Scottish Archives to listen to recordings, watch footage and view the collections.

Our Commitments to Gaelic 

The University has committed to increase the use, learning and visibility of Gaelic locally and nationally in our Gaelic Plan 2025-2030. Our community are at the heart of our Plan which strives to make our archives, learning resources and opportunities to use Gaelic accessible to local residents.

The University of Edinburgh is a member of Capital Gaelic, a network of organisations in Edinburgh including the National Museum of Scotland, National Library of Scotland, the City of Edinburgh Council and Comunn na Gàidhlig, working to promote Gaelic in the city.
