On 6th July 1920, King George V laid the foundation stone for the first of the buildings that would form part of The University of Edinburgh's new Science campus, relocated from its former Old College premises. The covid pandemic led us to postpone the centenary celebrations for one year, becoming KB101. Discover the history and people behind our diverse collection of buildings, explore what happens in our research spaces, and learn about our staff and students who undertake new investigations into how the world (and universe) around us works. For example, in the James Clerk Maxwell Building (aka JCMB), you can find out how special chambers affect the sound we hear, and explore the fourth dimension with our famous hypercube zoetrope. You can see the research labs in the Sanderson and Joseph Black Buildings, as well as the state-of-the-art Edinburgh Genome Foundry in the Swann Building. Throughout the virtual campus, we have also scattered a range of interactive activities linked to the science and engineering research we undertake on campus. Additionally, as part of our KB101 centenary celebrations, our virtual tour includes a sneak preview of an upcoming aerial photograph exhibition that highlights how The King’s Buildings has developed over the past 100 years.
