Scottish rugby legends gathered for a sports-themed quiz to raise funds for research into motor neurone disease. Former Scotland international and British & Irish Lion George ‘Doddie’ Weir, who was diagnosed with MND last year, was one of the guests of honour. Euan MacDonald, who co-founded the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at the University, was also an honoured guest. Image Just a Sports Quiz 2018 Just a Sports Quiz The annual event ‘Just a Sports Quiz’ raises vital funds to support research activities at the Euan MacDonald Centre. Around 500 sports fans took part alongside former Scotland and international rugby stars, including Scotland’s Scott Hastings and dual international John Allan, who played for both Scotland and South Africa during his career. Volunteers from Edinburgh University Ladies Rugby Football Club helped to keep the event running smoothly. MND MND, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a debilitating neurological condition that leads to muscle weakness, loss of mobility and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. Currently there is no cure or effective treatment. Research at the Euan MacDonald Centre, which is based at the University of Edinburgh, aims to improve the lives of people living with MND through laboratory studies as well as patient-centred research projects.
