Making Edinburgh a great place to be

A new survey ranks Edinburgh as one of the most dynamic places to live in Europe.

We might be biased, but we think Edinburgh is an amazing city to live, work and study in. We were extremely pleased that the University has played its part in the city’s recent success in a poll by property firm Savills.

130 European cities were assessed on 60 indicators across six categories – innovation, inspiration, inclusion, interconnection, investment and infrastructure. The index ranks Edinburgh 9th in Europe overall, with the city scoring 4th for inclusion and 5th for inspiration.

Savills say the University of Edinburgh has been a key contributor to the city’s high performance, and highlights the University’s expertise in the fields of medicine, Scots law, literature, science and engineering.

A great performance

The poll puts Edinburgh ahead of many larger European rivals, including Madrid, Brussels, Milan, Frankfurt and Barcelona.

Edinburgh is ranked 3rd in the UK, behind London (which came top of the Europe-wide list) and Cambridge (which came 3rd overall in Europe).

Other UK cities that were ranked include Oxford (14th), Bristol (25th), Manchester (27th) and Birmingham (30th).

Educational strength

According to Savills, Europe’s top-performing cities have strong infrastructure investments, high-quality universities and innovative businesses capable of attracting a global workforce.

The report also highlights how successful cities create partnerships across business, education and the public sector.

Europe’s most dynamic cities are future-proofing themselves by creating environments that encourage the growth of a ‘knowledge economy,’ something we are seeing increasing evidence of from Edinburgh.
