University of Edinburgh signs up to vision for city

The Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Professor Peter Mathieson is the latest person to sign the 2050 Edinburgh Charter, joining other organisations and representatives of the city such as the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Cllr Frank Ross.

By signing on behalf of the University, the Principal Peter Mathieson commits that the University's ambitions outlined in Strategy 2030 will reflect the Vision’s four principles of the 2050 Edinburgh City Vision Charter: Fair; Pioneering; Welcoming and Thriving.

The principles were endorsed by Councillors in June as being central to Edinburgh’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and underpinning a long-term vision for how the Capital will shape its future.

 

Community Plan 2020-25

The University has recently renewed its commitment to the city through its Community Plan 2020-25. The Plan outlines 32 practical commitments that the University is making to its local communities, including: £250,000 in grants for local organisations; a day of leave for staff to volunteer in the community and a new learning centre in Craigmillar.

Commitment 18 in the Plan states that University will sign up to the 2050 Edinburgh City Vision in its ambition to build close connections with the city.

Signing on behalf of the University, the Principal Peter Mathieson said: “Being a good and welcoming neighbour to our fellow citizens of Edinburgh is a priority for the University of Edinburgh.

 

Signing the 2050 Edinburgh Charter is part of our commitment to our social and civic responsibilities, as summarised in our recent Community Plan. All of these initiatives illustrate our willingness to build an even closer connection with our city and its communities.”
