In 2018, staff working in the Estates department at the University set up a charity group to have a positive impact on our wider community.

Initially, their aim was to raise £1,500 over the year, for a local charity. Thanks to the generosity of everyone in the Estates department, their original target was blown out of the water!

A department wide vote saw the Centre for Dementia Prevention, based at the University of Edinburgh’s BioQuarter, chosen as the Estates Department Charity of the Year.

The Centre for Dementia Prevention

The Centre for Dementia Prevention combines research in science, medicine and social sciences to lead global efforts in preventing dementia. Its vision is to achieve the following three goals:

  • To advance understanding of biomarkers in clinical and preclinical human populations
  • To drive global efforts to deliver new medicines that could act before clinical symptoms of dementia appear
  • To improve the experience of living with dementia by developing strategies that increase quality of life

Fundraising

Their year of fundraising kicked off in March with a Bake Sale that raised over £2,000 – beating their 2018 target with their first event!

In October, they held a Five-A-Side football tournament held at Peffermill Playing Fields. Participants loved the new pitches and all got together afterwards for a celebratory drink (and fundraising raffle). This event raised almost £1,000.

Next was a Quiz Night in Levels Café – a fun evening that saw another £500 raised for the Centre for Dementia Prevention (as well as a further £500 for another charity).

Throughout the year, staff also took part in various sponsored events, including the Edinburgh Marathon Festival’s 10K run and a 100-mile overnight cycle challenge.
